LES to pay $10 million to local governments

LINCOLN - LES will pay more than $10.3 million to the Lincoln School District, City of Lincoln, Lancaster County and Waverly as an annual revenue tax payment.

The $10.3 million payment represents 5 percent of the retail electric revenue in 2009 from within incorporated areas. The Lincoln School District and local governments receive the revenue tax from LES based on their proportionate share of the local tax levy.

The revenue tax payment paid by LES is higher than taxes paid by any other utility operating in the county.

LES has made the payments since its creation in 1966. During that time, recipients have received more than $189 million from LES.

The 2009 money paid to local governments will be distributed as follows:

  • Lincoln Public Schools: $6,954,892
  • City of Lincoln: $1,597,059
  • Lancaster County: $1,488,436
  • Waverly: $268,464
  • Total: $10,308,851

Over the last 44 years, the revenue tax paid to local governments totals the following:

  • Lincoln Public Schools: $124,546,496
  • City of Lincoln: $35,000,642
  • Lancaster County: $26,243,848
  • Waverly/Other: $3,345,836
  • Total: $189,136,822
