Yes, we want customers to use less of our product. Check out the following programs designed to help LES customers use less energy — and save more money.

LES Renewable Energy Certificates

What are Renewable Energy Certificates? Since it’s impossible to distinguish the exact source of energy once it enters the electric grid, RECs were created to help customers interested in prioritizing the use of renewable energy resources.

Under our REC rider, you can purchase LES RECs via your monthly bill, allowing you to reduce your carbon footprint and officially mark your home or business energy use as 100% renewable. You’ll continue to receive electric service according to your current rate with the same reliable, affordable service you’ve come to expect from your public power utility.

The program is an opportunity to promote environmental leadership in our community by allowing you to directly participate in the benefits of LES’ over 1.25 million megawatt-hours of renewable electricity from wind, solar and landfill gas each year. An REC is created with each MWh, equal to 1,000 kilowatt-hours, LES produces.

The 2020 REC price is $0.00061/kWh, which translates to under $7/year for an average Lincoln area home. LES will update the REC price annually (in January) based on the latest market projections. There is also a one-time enrollment fee of $10, which will be added to your next bill. See the REC brochure.

ENERGY STAR®

Top-notch comfort and rock bottom energy costs are yours when you build an ENERGY STAR home. See why ENERGY STAR qualified new homes are typically 30 percent more energy efficient than homes built to the national energy code.

LES wants to help you save money. And one of the best ways to save up to one-third on your electric bill is to use ENERGY STAR products, which are government-certified to be the most energy efficient.

ENERGY STAR homes…

  • Are typically 30 percent more energy efficient than homes built to the national energy code.
  • Use substantially less energy for heating, cooling and hot water heating compared to standard homes. Homeowners can expect to save about $200-$400 annually on their utility bills.
  • Keep out excessive heat, cold and noise and ensure consistent temperatures between and across rooms making these homes more comfortable to live in.

Features of an ENERGY STAR qualified new home include…

  • Increased insulation to help achieve even temperatures throughout the house while using less energy.
  • High-performance windows to help keep heat in during winter and out during summer.
  • Tight construction and tight ducts to help eliminate drafts, moisture, dust, pests and pollen.
  • Energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment that uses less energy. These systems also turn on and off less frequently, removing more humidity and providing better comfort.

Air source & geothermal heat pumps

Air source and geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient heating and cooling technologies on the market today.

It makes sense to save as much of your hard-earned money as you can. So, it makes sense to consider installing an air source or geothermal heat pump.

An efficient, economical home heating and air conditioning system, the air source heat pump keeps your home comfortable while keeping your energy costs to a minimum. It does not produce heat by burning fuel; instead, it transfers heat from the outdoor air, water or earth to your home’s indoor air.

During the summer, your heat pump becomes the central air conditioner, and the heat from the indoor air is absorbed and transferred outdoors. In the winter, the heat pump absorbs heat from the outdoor air using a refrigerant fluid flowing through a coil in the outdoor unit. The refrigerant then flows into the house and through another coil in the furnace where the heat is transferred to the indoor air.

A geothermal heat pump uses the natural heat of the earth to heat and cool your business up to three times as efficiently as the most efficient natural gas and propane heating systems on the market today. A geothermal heat pump takes heat from the earth during the winter and moves it into the building. In the summer, it takes heat from the building and moves it into the earth.

It’s quiet, low maintenance and easy to operate, environmentally friendly and safe (no soot, fumes or carbon monoxide) and fits easily into a basement, garage, crawl space or small closet.

If you are building a new home or replacing a heating or cooling system, one of these heat pumps may be just the technology you need to get the most out of your heating and cooling investment.
