LES held its EV Ride + Drive on Sept. 24, 2023, at Haymarket Park in Lincoln. Attendees took an EV for a spin, learned about purchasing and owning a plug-in vehicle from local EV owners and dealers, got a firsthand look at a variety of EVs on display and sat in on our EV seminars.

Meet presenter Don Cox

PresenterDr. DON COX is an adjunct professor, UNL College of Engineering, and former Stanford faculty member of 20 years. He is an EV enthusiast and subject matter expert, who also served as a pioneer in wireless technologies. His research at Bell Labs was fundamental in the development of mobile phone technology.

Meet presenter Randy Smith

PresenterRANDY SMITH has been an environmental specialist in the Planning and Aid division of the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) since 2016. Randy manages grants related to air quality and diesel emission reduction, including administering Nebraska’s share of the Volkswagen diesel emissions settlement. He designed and administered NDEE’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Rebate Program, which used $1.8 million of Volkswagen funds to partially fund 28 projects that have created 35 new public EV charging locations across Nebraska.

Randy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University and graduate degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of California Santa Cruz. He has experience as a geologist, educator, GIS specialist, and technical writer in addition to his work with NDEE.
